What You Need To Know

Here’s what happened around the city for the week of October 31, 2022:

- The election is here!
- Democracy attacked
- Governor Newsom withholds $47 million in homelessness funding
- Supervisor Stefani wants accountability for nonprofits

The November 2022 election rundown

Are you tired of hearing about Tuesday’s election? Well, we’re tired of talking about it. But it’s really important that we do. To motivate you, here are some sobering numbers to keep in mind:

  • Only 100,000 people have voted so far—that’s about 20% of registered voters.

  • Elected Supervisors are in charge of San Francisco’s $14 billion budget

  • Supervisor Dean Preston took office in 2019 with a margin of only 185 votes.

  • Supervisor Connie Chan took office in 2020 with a margin of only 125 votes.

If you don’t think your vote matters, let us assure you that it does. And if you’ve already voted, sharing our Voter Guide with friends and family really matters.

Here are our most important endorsements:

District 4 Supervisor (Sunset): Joel Engardio

Joel Engardio knows our West side families need to feel safe and their kids deserve a great education. That’s why Joel was a leader in both the School Board recall and the Chesa Boudin recall. Joel is the only candidate in the race who supported both recalls.

Joel will bring a focus on public safety, education, and fiscal responsibility to City Hall.

District 6 Supervisor (SOMA, Mission Bay): Matt Dorsey

Matt Dorsey is a strong voice for public safety, personal responsibility, and for holding drug dealers accountable. Since taking office earlier this year, Dorsey has put forward sweeping new legislation to clean up the district and to arrest the dealers of deadly fentanyl.

Dorsey is the only candidate who supported both the School Board and Chesa Boudin recalls.

District Attorney: Brooke Jenkins

Brooke Jenkins prioritizes prosecuting anti-Asian hate crimes and charging fentanyl dealers who are killing nearly two people every day via overdose.

School Board: Ann Hsu, Lainie Motamedi, Lisa Weissman-Ward

Ann Hsu, Lainie Motamedi, and Lisa Weissman-Ward are parents, not politicians. After over 70% of San Franciscans recalled the School Board, Mayor London Breed appointed them to fix our school district.

They prioritize academic achievement, support advanced instruction, and will balance the budget.

Defend our recall victory. Vote Ann, Lainie, and Lisa.

And the most important ballot measures:

  • ✅ Yes on Prop 1 - Constitutional right to abortion

  • ❌ No on Prop C - More red tape around homeless services

  • ✅ Yes on Prop D - Make it easier to build homes

    • Proposition D will make it easier for everyone to build housing that’s affordable to teachers, firefighters, and working families. Prop D is supported by GrowSF, Habitat for Humanity, the NorCal Carpenters Union, and State Senator Scott Wiener.

  • ❌ No on Prop E - Board of Supervisors anti housing measure

    • Proposition E is an anti-housing measure put on the ballot by the Board of Supervisors. It has a poison-pill provision that will kill Proposition D (Affordable Homes Now), and make it even harder to build the housing we desperately need.

  • ❌ No on Prop I - Close JFK Promenade, spend $80 million to move sand

  • ✅ Yes on Prop J - Keep JFK Promenade open

  • ❌ No on Prop M - New property tax on unoccupied housing

  • ❌ No on Prop O - New parcel tax for City College

GrowSF condemns the violent attack against Paul Pelosi. In a democratic society, no public official or their family should feel unsafe because of the elected position they hold.

We are happy to hear that Paul Pelosi was able to return home this week and wish him a swift and full recovery.

Governor Newsom withholds $47 million in homelessness funding

Gov. Newsom doesn't like SF's plan to address homelessness so he's holding up $47.3 million in funding for local shelters and other services.

No more excuses. We must elect leaders who will take the homelessness crisis seriously NOW and exercise fiscal responsibility while they’re at it. Vote Joel Engardio for District 4 (Sunset) Supervisor and Matt Dorsey for District 6 (SOMA, Mission Bay) Supervisor.

Supervisor Stefani wants accountability for nonprofits

San Francisco gives nearly $1 billion a year to nonprofits for services. Turns out, we haven’t been so great at measuring the efficacy of that funding. On Tuesday, Supervisor Stefani requested legislation be drafted requiring a standardized, streamlined process to audit nonprofits and make the information transparent for the public. We support this legislation! Sign our petition below to let the Board of Supervisors know that you support it too.

Your Action Plan

Now that you know what’s happening, help us shape what happens next:

Sign our petition to hold nonprofits accountable

Let the Board of Supervisors know that you demand accountability for your tax dollars. Sign and share our petition.

And one last chance to rally for parks and affordable homes…OK, two last chances

Celebrate San Francisco

There’s a lot to love about our city. Here’s what makes it great:

Election night parties!

GrowSF will not be hosting our own election night party this year. Instead, we’ll be joining parties for our endorsed candidates Joel Engardio, Matt Dorsey, Brooke Jenkins and the Prop D Affordable Homes Now campaign. Stay tuned for details.

The grand opening of the ice rink in San Francisco's Union Square brought out little ice-skating princesses moving to the song from Disney's film Frozen as well as an acrobatic performer in a giant wheel on Wednesday evening. https://t.co/pd0VB1vbiN
